Forever With You - Jennifer L. Armentrout

I received an ARC of Forever With You from the publisher as part of a Goodreads First-Reads giveaway (See?  Real people do win those things!).  I wanted to review this book in advance of the release date later this month.

I actually finished Forever With You last week, but I was unable to form in words just what I wanted to say in my review because, oh my God, the feels.  Forever With You, the 5th book in the Wait For You series, explores the story of Steph (yes, THE Steph from Avery and Cam's story) and Nick, the mysterious, brooding bartender introduced to us in Calla and Jax's story.  I will admit, from reading the first books in this series, I did not like Steph or Nick and did not anticipate enjoying this story.  I. WAS. SO. WRONG.

From the first word to the very last word, I was engrossed in Steph's world.  It was refreshing to see that she really is not the bad person I thought she was in the beginning of the series.  She has perfectly justifiable reasons for being quiet and standoffish.  And, as the author so cleverly describes, she has a terrible case of resting bitch face, which makes everyone think she's not friendly.  And Nick.  I never anticipated that Nick would be a good guy.  He was always this quiet, unfriendly person who was just there.  Nothing special.  Kind of a dick.  But he too had his reasons for acting the way that he did in previous books.  This book totally changed my opinion of him.  I never thought I would say this, but Nick has replaced Cameron Hamilton as my fictional book boyfriend.  I know!  I'm just as shocked as you are.

Perhaps my favorite part of Steph's story is that the author puts a cap on slut shaming.  Steph likes sex.  A lot.  She is not afraid to admit it.  She is not embarrassed by it.  She refuses to be held to the double standard where women are sluts for liking sex and men are idolized.  This is how it should be.  There should be no double standard and I loved Steph the minute she owned who she was and did not hide from what she enjoyed.  Everyone should be that brave.

I don't want to spoil things for those who have not read the book.  You can get a synopsis from the book's Goodreads page or Amazon page or whatever.  But I am going to talk about a major event that happened in the book, and this event is why I had difficulty writing this review before now.  In fact, I will probably cry while writing this review just as I cried for hours while reading the book.  Steph experiences a tragedy that nobody should ever have to experience.  I had trouble reading this because I experienced the exact same thing.  Honestly, for a few chapters, I was angry at the author because it felt like she had spied on my life and had written the story of what I went through in March and April of this year.  However, as I forced myself to keep reading, I grew less and less angry and more and more grateful.  Here's why.

The author captured this tragedy so accurately, that it was like she honestly knew what it was like to experience it.  From the moment the situation began to the moment it ended, Steph's actions and emotions were identical to what I did and what I felt.  The difference?  Nick is a good guy and he made Steph's tragic story work out the way I thought my tragedy should have worked out.  Neither of us should have even experienced a tragedy but because these things happen, I thought my story should have went just like Steph's.  I thought I was foolish to believe that it could end like Steph's story and I am grateful that the author essentially told my story in a way that showed that I was not foolish to believe that happy endings can come out of tragedies.  Either the author did a ton of research on this situation or she has or knows someone who has experienced this.  There is no other way that she could so accurately capture every detail the way she did.  It was a tragedy so well written, I would dare say that it was beautiful.

I never expected to write about my own personal tragedy on my blog, but I also never expected to read a book that so closely described everything from the way it began to the way it ended.  There was never a dull moment in this book.  The character development was so spot on, I felt like I actually knew these people.  I am going be bold and say that Forever With You is the best book in the Wait For You series so far.  It is by far my favorite.  If you are a fan of Jennifer Armentrout, please do not miss out on this excellent novel.
